It's amazing what you can fit into 110 characters or less. I am constantly receiving please call me messages from my cousin who is a university student and on the please call me is a small piece of text based advertising, an insurance policy to be exact. A please call me (or PCM as they [...]

From Zambian Economist Tue Jul 3 2012, 15:55:00

I have been trying to steer clear of the latest book offering from Dambisa Moyo Winner Take All. This recent review in the Daily Telegraph rather echoes what we have come to expect from Moyo :

This Zambian economist became famous with Dead Aid, a trenchant attack on the development industry. In Winner Take All, she has produced a flawed and frustrating book, simplistic, poorly written, careless with facts and largely devoid of originality. This latter point is most telling. There is no point approaching a subject of this importance unless you are willing to do some original reporting. Aside from one paragraph on page 90, which describes a scene at an unnamed international conference, nothing in Winner Take All suggests that Moyo has travelled anywhere, seen anything for herself, or ...

From Jewels in the Jungle Tue Jul 3 2012, 11:50:00

This is a brief "heads up" post about the fight of the Tuareg for an independent state (Azawad) in the Sahel. You may have already read news articles about the takeover of the historic cities of Timbuktu (Tomboctou) and Gao in northern Mali by Tuareg militias. Just yesterday various news agencies were reporting about the wanton destruction of centuries-old historical mosques, mausoleums and sacred tombs, along with the theft of irreplaceable Medieval Islamic books, scripts, and historical documents by an alarmingly increasing number of radical Islamist militants and thieves who have swept into Timbuktu and Gao in the wake of the security vacum created by the March 22nd coup. I would hope that some of my fellow blog authors, friends and readers around the blogosphere will stay on top of ...

From AfricaCan End Poverty Tue Jul 3 2012, 11:30:07

As European leaders convened in Brussels to find solutions--yet again!--to the debt crisis in the Euro zone, Kenyans are witnessing the old continent's woes with a mix of surprise and self-satisfaction.

If only Greece had managed its debt like Kenya, Europe would be in a much better shape today. Greece's debt would be standing at 45 percent of GDP, less than a third of what it actually is. Recent global economic history would need to be rewritten and Europe's sick nation would be a macroeconomic success, with the luxury of deciding how to spend its resources well, rather than scrambling to mobilize them.

From World ยป Alex Perry | TIME.com Tue Jul 3 2012, 05:45:48

The attack by suspected Islamist militants on two churches in eastern Kenya on Sunday, in which the assailants killed 17 people and wounded 60 more, is more bloody confirmation of the emergence of African terrorist groups. A group of seven masked men threw grenades into the Catholic Church and African Inland Church in Garissa, close [...]
