The dispersed settlements in which most rural Zambians live poses egregious challenges to the development of public health infrastructure like roads, clinics and school. Their dispersed distribution calls into question the practicality of continuing this traditional lifestyle and cultural behavior in the 21st century.

The villagers need clinics, schools and roads yet want no part in shouldering the costs or the life transformations these services require to sustain. They want to return settlement decisions framed in the 18thcentury when the threat of inter-ethnic conflicts lead most ethnic groups to move further apart, beyond the reach of perceived aggressors.

Achieving an AIDS-free generation is a chief rallying cry at AIDS 2012 this week in Washington, DC. In the U.S., reaching the goal is not a question of resources, but resolve, according to experts speaking at sessions focused on AIDS in America. Unlike many affected countries, the U.S. can provide treatment to all who need it and fund outreach and education for those vulnerable to infection. But attention to the disease has waned in recent years and the new infection rate has been stubbornly stuck at roughly 50,000 annually for most of the last decade.

From The Vim Views & Versions - Blogs of a MIghTy African Sat Jul 28 2012, 16:45:00

My first travels outside Ghana in 2012 landed me in Tanzania. My time there helped shape what my Tanzanian alter-ego would be like. I never had as many Tanzanian friends as I would have wanted, in fact I might have had as many non-Tanzanian friends who had once lived in Tanzania as Tanzanian friends. Tanzania is affectionately called "Bongo". The Bongo friends I've had have been awesome people and close friends as well. How couldn't I love a country where their major language is an African one? Kiswahili. I wish I could write this whole blog entry in Swahili but I'm not quite there yet. Hamis will give it a stab later. Who's Hamis? So after Ayooluwaato Eze from Nigeria, Richard Nshuti Mayanja from Uganda, and David Ochieng Mwangi from Kenya, I introduce to you all Hamis Ambwene Massawe, my ...

It is time for every US citizen who cares about the human rights of people with disabilities all around the world, including fellow Americans, to tell your Senators to support the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Your calls, emails, and visits to your senators are absolutely vital.

From Nigeria Health Watch Sat Jul 28 2012, 10:56:00

Our Senator President, David Mark, the Nigerian Senate President recently called for a check on the use of the social media in the Nigeria, saying that people now use them to demean their leaders. Wow.... this is the same gentleman that came to fame when he declared previously that that telephones were not meant for ordinary people when he was Minister of Communication. The good senator does seem to have a problem with information being in the hands of the people. What really is he afraid of? What stories are spread by social media that he thinks are demeaning?

One recent story that went viral in the Nigerian Twittersphere was this;

A session at the International AIDS Conference entitled "Dynamics of the Epidemic in Context" was a study in contrasts. The first three presentations were a reminder of the similar challenges faced by sex workers, intravenous drug users and MSM (Men who have Sex with Men). Within specific countries, each of these groups has an HIV prevalence that is usually significantly greater than that of the general population of their country. Individuals in these groups are often stigmatized, sometimes including rejection by their own families

From ::Colored Opinions:: Sat Jul 28 2012, 07:32:00

Today William Wallis and Katrina Manson quote a 'Senior official' from the great lakes region in the Financial Times who claims that ridiculing Kagame isn't the way to get him to do things. This senior donor official goes on to assert that withdrawing money, as the US did, was the wrong move, they should have asked Kagame to rein in the rebels and states:

'Kagame is the only one in this region who can make this happen. In Congo, Kagame is the game changer, not Kabila' No further details are given on the background of this senior donor official. In light of suspension of aid by the Netherlands and the statements and actions by the US I assume senior officials from these countries don't contradict their government's policies. We can also exclude the Nordic countries, along with India, while ...
