[view whole blog postLast year, Sweden took on an experiment in social media as a form of nation branding by turning over its national Twitter account, @sweden, to a different citizen each week. Citizens are nominated and evaluated by a panel, but their tweets aren't reviewed or edited, which led some observers to predict the experiment would be [...]
[view whole blog postIn response to the Federal Digital Strategy that the White House released in May 2012, the Department of State seeks your input in identifying services that may be appropriate for development by modern tools and technologies. We have two questions for you.
Application Programming Interfaces, or APIs, allow for sharing data between applications. Content that is created in one place can be dynamically posted and updated in multiple locations on the web. What information from the U.S. State Department would you find useful for us to make available via web APIs?
[view whole blog postSOME 300m people in southern Africa are to be deprived of their right to appeal to a supra-national regional court in disputes with their governments over human-rights issues. Leaders of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), a 15-member regional club, agreed at their annual summit in Maputo, Mozambique's capital, to "renegotiate the protocol" of the organisation's tribunal so as to ban access by individuals and restrict its jurisdiction to disputes between member states.
Civil-rights groups are appalled. National courts in the region are all too often packed with pliant judges willing to hand down decisions favourable to the government. The SADC Tribunal, to which all 15 members signed up when it was established in 1992, offered victims at least a chance of impartial judgment ...

[view whole blog postYesterday, I participated in two events, using new tools -- specifically social media -- to explain the ways that the United States is providing humanitarian assistance to those affected by the violence in Syria. This format is a virtual press conference; journalists log-in, submit questions in real time, and watch the discussion online from wherever they are around the world. Over 15 international media outlets participated, and we were able to reinforce the message that... more »

By Hazel Sheffield It took the Olympics to prove it: Britain might as well be Middle Earth to most Americans. Only that could explain why NBC hosts told opening ceremony viewers to Google the identity of Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, without a trace of irony. Or that, during the closing ceremony, I had to explain to American friends...

[view whole blog postEthiopian is one of the few airlines offering a direct flight from the US to Africa. They fly from Washington DC (IAD) direct to Addis Ababa. The airline recently added the Boeing 787 Dreamliner to its fleet, the first of its kind in Africa. The Boeing 787 will be flying the Dulles - Addis route as of September 20, 2012.
Ethiopian Airlines has a very extensive network within Africa along with reasonable rates. They tend to undercut most airlines by at least $300 on routes from the US to destinations like Lusaka (Zambia), Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), and Mahe (Seychelles) to name a few (check all special fares). They serve 69 international destinations on four continents. If you're looking to fly anywhere in East Africa, or wish to combine East with Southern Africa, they are a great option. ...
