As far as we know, there are at least 5 film projects in the works based on either the life of MLK, or some significant period during his 39 years on this planet. The only one that has seemed like a sure-thing is the Oprah Winfrey/HBO/Steven Spielberg/DreamWorks project that has the backing of King's estate. It's the only one with the Estate's approval that we're aware of. However, it looks like one of the other 4 might be back in motion after a lengthy stay in Limbo. Last we wrote about the Paul Greengrass-directed MLK assassination pic, Memphis, which was once a sure-thing, the studio backing it, Universal Pictures, had backed out of...
[view whole blog postAs someone who watched both shows regularly, I can't say that I'm surprised. I was most excited about Last Resort, especially after we saw the first trailer for it. I had high hopes. But it's becoming clearer to me that the best dramas are just no longer on network TV. You can to go to cable for if you want to see the great stuff. Right now, unless a show has the names J.J. Abrams, Shonda Rhimes or Jerry Bruckheimer attached to it, it's probably not on solid ground. Although that's not a steadfast rule. ABC has canceled both Last Resort and 666 Park Avenue. Why? Why else? Ratings. Both started the season fairly decently (especially Last Resort),...
[view whole blog postIn Eritrea, the day of the armed rebellion and name of its Founders is quite known among its inhabitants and the writers, who chose the history of the region as their specialty. Ask, however, anybody about the origin and purpose of the use of the word "ghedli", (derived from "gadla", the language of liturgy of the Ge'ez-Rite religions), and chances are nobody has a given a thought about it. Is the use of this word, which means life or act of saints in English, an incidental borrowing of the fronts or a deliberate use of religious concepts for political propaganda? ...

[view whole blog postWe covered filmmaker Mohamed Dione's short film Maffe Tiga - starring Dione and Marie Josephine Zoumanigui - exactly a year ago, last November, and since then, it's been screened at several film festivals around the world. So far, it's been shown at the Black Harvest Film Festival in Chicago, the 7th edition of the Kenya International Film Festival in Kenya, The Soul Bliss Festival, and the 15th annual African American Women in Cinema Film Festival. And on top of that, it was nominated for an African Movie Academy Award in Nigeria. Dione describes his film as a "romantic dramedy about a young African woman who finds that love is the true...

[view whole blog postA new study from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) finds that since 2008, state efforts to reform Medicaid and make the low-income safety net program more efficient -- likely spurred by provisions in the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act (CHIPRA) and Obamacare -- have resulted in lower application processing times and high beneficiary coverage [...]

Egyptians are drafting their very own secular law - on Twitter. It all started when Mahmoud Salem - aka Sandmonkey - suggested writing such a law after noting that Islamists have no respect for secular people and consider them to be both un-Islamic and controlled by non-Muslims. On cue, the hashtag #شريعة_العلمانية [ar] (Secular Law) soon came up, and was populated with suggestions on what this new sharia (law) for secular people should be.

[view whole blog postMoody's last week issued a first public rating assignment to Zambia as it expands its rating of African economics. It has assigned Zambia a fairly strong rating of B1 (still far from investment grade though). According to Moody :
"The outlook on these ratings is stable. The B1 ratings reflect the following key factors: 1) Expectation of continued rapid growth, which should support economic diversification and over time increase the country's low wealth levels. 2) The country's track record of political stability, which benefits its developing institutional strength. 3) Zambia's low albeit improved financial strength, following debt forgiveness from official creditors in 2006"
