According to Einstein, insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. So why are we surprised when aspects of government activity, that for decades have failed to change the trajectories of peoples' lives, still don't work? If you were working out how to design quality public services from ground zero, [...]

[view whole blog postFor those who were waiting to see Edris Elba in Pacific Rim . . . you will have to continue to wait. Today the viral campaign for the film kicked into high gear. With the launch of a website for Pan Pacific Defense Corps which treated us to little more than a map with a countdown to December 12th. No specifics were given about what will happen on this date but other sites are speculating a trailer. My guess is they are probably correct. In addition to the web-site a couple of viral videos and a letter have also made an appearance. Pacific Rim directed by Guillermo del Toro (Pans Labyrnth) is scheduled to open July 2013.
[view whole blog postThe exhumation of Yasser Arafat's body has to be one of the more bizarre and macabre stories of the year, and I must confess I have no idea what the results may be. It's of some personal nterest since my netime MEI colleague Clayton Swisher, now with Al Jazeera English, dug up the story that led them to di g up Arafat. I tend to be skeptical of conspiracy theories, but this is the Middle East, and he had many enemies. (I think Palestinians are reflexively assuming that if he was poisoned it must have been Israel, but a real conspiracy theorist ought to be able to come up with something more Byzantine than that.)
Omar Dajani's post yesterday at Foreign Policy, "Arafat's Ghost," neatly ties the exhumation with the UN vote on Palestine. It's worth a read.
