The Swaziland king and last absolute monarch in sub-Saharan Africa, Mswati III, has had a private underground bunker built for himself and his family, a prodemocracy group says.

It is on a specially-built private road connecting two of the king's palaces at Lozitha and Ngabezweni, the Swaziland Solidarity Network (SSN) says.

A group of Winnipeggers is trying to prevent a U.S. woman who made incendiary remarks such as "evil" Jews from entering Canada again.

"I don't know how the Canadian border agency would let this woman come again," said Eritrean refugee Daniel Awshek. He attended an event in Winnipeg in 2010 where he said expatriate Eritrean Sophia Tesfamariam made the remarks and shamed people who had fled Eritrea, urging them to send the regime money.

The eradication of extreme poverty now seems more achievable than ever, but we need a revolution in transparency

Eight years on, the Gleneagles G8 seems like something from a more innocent age. A time before Twitter, when even Facebook was little more than a couple of dorms at Harvard. Yet at the time it didn't seem that way. We were well past 9/11, after all. Scepticism about politicians' motives abounded. The global anti-poverty campaign had matured too - professionalised, according to some. If Jubilee 2000 in 1998 was the critically-acclaimed first album, 2005's Make Poverty History was the greatest hits.

Two films that were recently picked up by The Weinstein Co and sure to be two of the most discussed films this year on S & A have had their theatrical release dates announced. Ryan Coogler's Fruitvale, which won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for an U.S. dramatic film at the Sundance Film Festival in January, will be released on October 18. There is already talk of a possible screening of the film at this year's Cannes Film Festival, but a showing at the Toronto Film Festival is practically a sure thing with an Oscar nominations push by the company towards the end of the year. Meanwhile Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom starring Idris Elba in the lead role and Naomie...

By Morriah Kaplan Following the hottest year on record -- one that recorded over 3,000 monthly records for heat, rain, and snow -- the public is starting to agree that climate change might, in fact, be real. Though we all have a stake in an issue that will continue to cause extreme weather events, escalate [...]

Despite nearly two years of ongoing conflict in Syria, grain is being ground into flour, tested for moisture and protein content, and baked into sample loaves of bread. Flour that meets approval is bagged and loaded onto trucks bound for a distribution warehouse in Aleppo Governorate.

At the warehouse, each bag is accounted for as it is offloaded by workers. A community member, who helps oversee the warehouse, looks on, notepad in hand. He talks about how the flour can help ease the financial burden of the displaced Syrians who crowd almost all available living space in the neighborhood.

In March 2012, US charity Invisible Children launched a film, Kony2012, in a bid to highlight the barbarity of a Ugandan warlord. It became a viral hit online, but the media frenzy proved too much for campaign organiser Jason Russell, who had a very public meltdown. In his first press interview since, he explains why his campaign must continue

Exactly a year ago, Jason Russell was a nobody. Not a nobody, precisely, but just ordinary. Normal. He was a healthy father of two, living in San Diego, and was happy and fulfilled in his work as a director for Invisible Children, a non-profit organisation he'd helped found.

I've been meaning to write a blog post about yet another tournament that ended without the Black Stars of Ghana winning the whole shebang. And then the Ayews 'retired' from the Black Stars. Bang! Opinion is divided on whether Ghana should get the services of Dede and Jordan Ayew for our national football team. Opinion is also divided on whether they could have helped the Black Stars do better at the African Cup of Nations that just happened in South Africa. I think they would have helped but I had few reasons to believe we couldn't end our trophy wait earlier this month. If you're counting, the Black Stars have not won a major tournament in more than 30 years. In fact, the Black Stars have not lifted a trophy since I was born. Yeah, go ahead and put the blame on me.

I have been an avid ...
