Kenyans vote today (in some places voting have already started). And somehow, as in any election in any African country, the cliches are not far behind. "Will Kenya fall into mayhem after the results of the general elections are announced?" "Will one of (East) Africa's most politically stable countries see a return of post-election violence [...]
[view whole blog post( I wrote this story just after the Tsunami, trying to find a way to understand what 200,000+ people dead really means)
SHE LAYS still, her body bloated and pale. In the constantly moving water, her long, black hair waves like ribbons in the wind. Fish swim past; nibble a bit at her battered leg, then move on. A small crab creeps over the mound of her bare stomach. A piece of seaweed is wrapped around her toe. He wonders where have her clothes gone to.
[view whole blog postCongratulations to director Kim Nguyen, star Rachel Mwanza, and the rest of the crew and cast that made War Witch (Rebelle) possible! The film picked up 10 trophies at the The Canadian Screen Awards (Les prix Écrans Canadiens) this evening - awards given annually by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television recognizing excellence in Canadian film, TV, and digital media productions. What's even more impressive is that the War Witch (which lost the Best Foreign Language Oscar to Austria's Amour last week) was nominated in 12 categories. So while it wasn't quite a clean sweep, 10 out of 12 certainly isn't anything to sneeze at! The 10 wins include nods in major categories like best...

[view whole blog postIn an interview he had with Aljazeera in 2010, the President was in absolute denial to the interviewer's assertion that the United Nations had reported an increasing number of refugees coming out of Eritrean and that in 2009 alone 60,000 Eritrean refugees were registered in neighboring countries. In an interview he gave with local media from 27 to 30 December 2011, he discussed the flight of the youth. He stated that there was conspiracy to weaken the country. He intimated that the number of youth fleeing the country was negligible, that they left due to their ambitious nature, and due to outside influences that made them lose direction. He opined that it was not possible to establish emotionally stable life in a foreign country and concluded by ...

[view whole blog postIt's been 5 years since Miriam Zenzile Makeba aka Mama Africa died. Miriam was probably one of the most popular African musicians ever. When she passed away, I wrote a blog post for Museke. She had died singing, as her demise came shortly after she had been rushed to the hospital while doing what she does best in Italy. She was the Empress of African Song and a pioneer of African Music. She was affectionately called "Mama Africa".
Google is honouring the late Miriam Makeba on her birthday with a Doodle. My friend Tumi saw it much earlier than me as she is in China at the moment. Since I've hit Monday (#MusicMonday) here in Accra, I can to. You can see it on Google.com today.
[view whole blog postHappy Women's History Month! This marched into our lives before we knew it and then I started thinking a lot about Yaa Asantewaa. In fact, nothing speaks more of Women's History as dominantly as the story of the one-time queenmother of Ejisu. She is a symbol of a leading lady, having led the Ashanti people against the British in the War of the Golden Stool. I've discussed the legend of Yaa Asantewaa and how it should be in a movie many times, notably with the GhanaThink community. Paa Kwesi got us started when he revealed his infatuation with epic movies. When I started celebrating Ghanaian movies, I championed the idea again. and it made me ask questions about Yaa Asantewaa. I posted "Me, am waiting for a Yaa Asantewaa movie o!" on Facebook.
[view whole blog postYou can't start talking about the Black Stars without talking about their "hairstyles". Vorsah, Wakaso and Gyan stood out amongst the lot at the African Cup of Nations. A few image searches of the players below would yield what their barbers have been doing to them for reasons I cannot barb. Let's stick to dissecting the usual suspects, and name (with nicknames) who should feature for the Black Stars as we prepare towards shockprising the world in Brazil 2014.

[view whole blog postThe Guardian's Sunday edition, The Observer, have run the puff-piece nobody else wanted, a lengthy tête-à-tête with Jason Russell of Invisible Children infamy. "Jason Russell: Kony 2012 and the fight for truth" (illustrated by the photograph above) is a dreadful, half-assed piece of reporting that seeks to help resuscitate Russell's broken credibility. Russell found an unexpected [...]
