In May, London-born Ghanaian rapper Fuse ODG and Sean Paul announced the Afrobeats vs Dancehall competition to create a buzz about their new cross-national, collaborative single, "Dangerous Love."  Using the hashtags #AfrobeatsVsDancehall #DangerousLove, people were asked to upload videos on to Youtube where they danced to the Killbeatz and Di Denius-produced track. A steady stream of videos has been uploaded to the site from several different places around the world [...]

Sinkane continues to offer us precursors of his new album Mean Love which is due September 2, 2014. He began with the tender "Hold Tight," now he offers funky soul in "How We Be." The Brooklyn-based musician's sound is graceful and unhurried with the grit and coolness of Shaft. He humorously calls his music "fake jazz". City Slang, his record company, describes the music as "doses of West African funk [...]

CyHi the Prynce invited South African rapper Reason - who strangely has been called every variation of neophyte by popular hip hop sites - and Well$ - who has been gaining momentum over the last couple of months with his mixtape MTSYD: The Revenge Of The African Booty Scratcher - to join him on the remix of his song, Mandela. The original appeared on CyHi's 18-song mixtape Black Hystori Project, [...]

NeoSoulfulRnBAfroJazzyThings singer Debra Debs has been steadily promoting her debut album LifeCycles since its release in the UK late last year. Besides performing her song Fizzy Lemonade on BBC Radio a few months ago, she shared this video of a mini-jam session that was shot before one of her shows. It's also interesting that in spite of the chorus of industry doomsayers wailing about the 'death of the CD', the [...]

South Africa's Felix Laband, like Santa Claus, sneakily dropped off a gift for his fans on his newly created Soundcloud page - he released three separate songs intensifying rumors that he may be releasing a full-length project later in the year. Felix has been relatively quiet since his Dark Days Exit. He emerged from (relative) obscurity to play Rock the Daises 2011 and several other gigs. He also had a [...]

The African Abroad is a new column featuring the random musings of AfriPOP! editor Yolanda Sangweni. It's been three months since Boko Haram kidnapped over 300 girls from the Nigerian town of Chibok. Days after it happened, many of us took to our social media feeds to protest and raise awareness. We've tweeted about it, signed petitions about it--some of us have even attended protest rallies around the world. But [...]

Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who received rave reviews for her performance in the period drama Belle, will play the lead in Gina Prince-Bythewood's newest film, Beyond the Lights. Like Prince-Bythewood's most popular love story Love and Basketball, Beyond the Lights follows the challenging and possibly doomed love story of a troubled young pop star and her less famous romantic suitor. Noni Jean is a fresh, young artist who has just won a [...]

We first heard Flavour's I'm For Real a few days before Valentine's weekend. The release was either serendipitous or purposeful because as he explained then, he wanted to create a song that his fans could "celebrate love with". Wanting to convey raw, uninhibited emotion, I'm For Real does not have the usual bells and whistles that are often a feature of Flavour's highlife music. It is perhaps the clearest recording [...]

The ever-vigilant staff over at Africa is a Country released a video where writer and editor Bongani Madondo explains the philosophy and the inspirations of the book he edited about pop icon Brenda Fassie. About a month ago Bongani Madondo released one of the most significant works in African literature - I'm Not Your Weekend Special: Portraits on the Life+Style & Politics of Brenda Fassie. Yet another artist has been inspired by Stromae's melancholic but beguiling music. Canadian jazz and soul artist Kellylee Evans made an English version of the Belgian artist's dance hit Alors On Danse for her fourth album I Remember When. And So We Dance is just one of the many covers she has done for that album where she appears as the bandleader. It was released on Canadian iTunes in February [...]
