Dealing with people with disabilities is usually far down on the priority list in a humanitarian disaster, but these 12 steps can ensure they are not neglected

Beyond the lack of access to support and assistive device, stigma also leads family members to sometimes hide away people with disabilities, making them invisible to humanitarian organisations. Without proactive measures, they are excluded from emergency care.

According to the recent World Report on Disability, 15% of the population worldwide have a disability, and 80% of those live in developing countries. With the UN Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), inclusion is no longer a mere desirable and ideal situation, but a requirement of international law.
