Last January, I began working with a personal trainer at my gym. James approached me one day when I was "not doing much," in his words, on the elliptical machine. He said I looked as if I had a lot more to give and would I mind if he showed me some exercises? I said no and followed him into the training room.
Having been a high school athlete and dancer all my life, injuries, surgery, and physical therapy put me on the sidelines in 2012. At the time when James approached me, I was more than a few pounds overweight and had begun to understand what it felt like to be trapped in one's body. I thought I'd found a happy medium between free and debilitated that included long, boring periods on the elliptical machine--just enough to get me sweating and burn some calories, but not enough to injure or aggravate any preexisting conditions.
What James showed me that day--calisthenics, isometrics, circuit training--helped me see how much more I could be doing, so much so that I signed up for three months of training.
