[view whole blog postYou know there are so many of thse ratchet wives reality shows on TV that no one can keep up with them. Take Starter Wives Confidential for example. The TLC reality show feature the ex-wives and ex-girlfriends of DMX, 50 Cent, Lamar Odom, Funk Master Flex and Floyd Maywaether acting up and being all ratchet I suppose. And if that sounds like your cup of tea, you're too late. After only three episodes TLC has pulled the plug on the show. Now supposedly, according to Monica Taylor who is Flex's ex-wife, the network decided to end the show because of legal issues. Seems that Fiddy had some sort of contract with his ex-girlfreind Shanequa Tompkins that prevented her...

[view whole blog postA new study suggests that China's model of providing large concessionary loans for infrastructure projects to be paid back by sending oil and minerals to China is gradually changing. Ana Cristina Alves authored a report titled "China's Economic Statecraft and African Mineral Resources: Changing Modes of Engagement" in January 2013 as an occasional paper for the South African Institute of International Affairs.
The report explains how China is moving from loans that swap infrastructure for resources to a new tactic. Although infrastructure for resources remains an important tool to meet Beijing's oil and mineral supply concerns, China's state owned enterprises are increasingly moving into mergers and acquisitions of resources in Africa.

[view whole blog postReporters Without Borders welcomes the referral of the case of imprisoned Swedish-Eritrean journalist and writer Mr. Dawit Isaak to the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR). Dawit Isaak´s case will be discussed this week during the Commission´s extra-ordinary session 18-25 February in Banjul, The Gambia.
"The fact that the Commission has taken up our request means that it has found our submission substantial. It is an important first step in what I hope will result in a ruling against Eritrea. In that case, the Commission, who is the African Union´s main human rights body, will demand the release of Dawit Isaak", says Swedish lawyer Jesús Alcalá.

[view whole blog postYes I did post this article just a month ago, but since it's coming up soon, this Sunday in fact, I thought a freindly reminder wouldn't be out of place But first, as some of you may recall, I wrote an item in January about The Black Cinema House in Chicago, a newly established screening space, in operation since this fall, devoted to the exhibition and discussion of independent and rarely seen black cinema in all its forms - HERE. Among the films the House has screened recently were the groundbreaking experimental 1958 classic Cry of Jazz, which was introduced by Northwestern University professor Jacqueline Stewart, Richard Pryor's Jo Jo Dancer - Your Life Is Calling...
[view whole blog postAn update on a project we've been following since 2011, when we first learned about it. As a matter of fact, November 2011 was the last time it was mentioned on S&A - so it's certainly been a little while with no updates. Until today, what we've known is that Canadian filmmaker Clement Virgo has been developing a highly-anticipated film adaptation of author Lawrence Hill's award-winning bestseller, The Book of Negroes. Boasting one of the strongest female characters in recent Canadian fiction, the novel's synopsis reads: Abducted as an 11-year-old child from her village in West Africa and forced to walk for months to the sea in a coffle-a string...

[view whole blog postA few moments after the accident happened, I thought of two major things. First, thank God for my life. God has really blessed me and continues to be there for me. It was just a few hours before my birthday too o! Stacey, my sister, came to the accident scene and said something I'd never forget. "You've been getting so many birthday wishes on your Facebook Timeline (Wall). People love you a lot and that love has saved you right now". Isn't that just beautiful? Second thought? I have triumphed. I've just had an accident with my car seriously damaged and I have no injuries, I am not in shock and I feel extremely normal. Now let me tell you the story of this major car accident.
It's 30th December 2012. 7:30pm. After leaving a pool party organized by my friend Mac-Jordan with my sister and my ...
[view whole blog postIn October 2012, I bought my very first car. I hadn't planned on buying one but a Google colleague was leaving for a different job in Europe and was selling his car. The car didn't make it to Google Trader, the news was spread amongst a few people and when I knew of the price, I just had to buy it. It was a great deal. Nissan Sentra 2006 model with a new engine and shocks for a shockprised price of 9500 GhC. Yeap, I am one lucky SOB. This car has had quite the interesting and dramatic relationship with me. I want to share its story, the story of the #VimRide. I'm still looking for a cool name for my car, I'm taking suggestions. My friend Fiifi already has taken Vera for his, so that's eliminated. My friends don't like Vero or Victoria. If you win this car-naming contest, I'd take you for ...
[view whole blog postOn Twitter, Egyptians who voted for Mohamed Morsi in the Egyptian presidential elections in June 24 are remorseful - and their regret is evident in a new hashtag which reads: I elected Morsi because .. The hashtag [ar] #انا_انتخبت_مرسي_عشان generated tongue-in-cheek and sarcasm. Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood candidate, won the presidential runoff elections against Ahmed Shafik, the last prime minister of Hosni Mubarak, who resigned after 32 years following 18 days of country-wide protests against his rule.

[view whole blog postRecently, I've found myself listening to more and more South African Jazz. In particular, I've been gravitating towards the late pianist and producer, Moses Taiwa Mololekwa. Now, I must admit that my appreciation for Mololekwa's music did not come about immediately and I fully acknowledge that his music is not for everyone (especially his inaccurately-labeled [...]
