I totally missed this story so big hat-tip to Alex Engwete My take on this is that it is not as quite as amused as Alex seems to view it. From the Daily Maverick.
[view whole blog postAs they say in the promos for the show: "Ripped from the headlines". Next Wednesday's episode of NBC's Law & Order: SVU will be based on the turbulent relationship between Chris Brown and Rihanna. Maybe the surprising thing is why it took them so long to do it. The episode, called Funny Valentine, is based...what's the point? Look at the promo and see for yourself. Oh yes, Wendy Williams makes a cameo appearence on the show as well. But then, of course she would. But do you think this is tasteless, or it doesn't really matter? Besides NBC has to do something. In case you haven't heard, it's currently fifth in overall...

[view whole blog postActually this news about this came out a few weeks ago but it was overlooked, even by me I'm ashamed to say, but it is great news for admirers (like me) of the great Paul Robeson. Six of Robeson's films from the 1930's will be remastered in high definition for release on blu-ray and standard DVD though the Cohen Media Group label The films were originally part of the film collection of the Rohauer Library which owned the rights to some 700 films of Hollywood and foriegn films as well classic garde classics. The library was acquired the by Cohen Media Group and reititled as the Cohen Collection and they plan to eventually restore all the films for future...
[view whole blog postAt a small compound not far from the airport in Dushanbe, an Afghan, a Tunisian, and a Tajik official sit side-by-side listening to a lecture on weapons smuggling interdiction. As the American instructor's words are simultaneously translated into Dari, English, and Tajik, the students furiously scribble notes. They will have to present research projects on this material in the near future. They do not want to be caught unprepared.
The students are but three of 41 border management and/or security officials from Central Asia and beyond who have come to the OSCE Border Management Staff College in Tajikistan to learn how to fight terrorism, human trafficking, illicit drug trade, and many other threats that governments face as they manage long, porous borders. More Afghans have... more »

[view whole blog postThe achievement gap between school districts in high-income neighborhoods and those in low-income ones is already more canyon than crack, and if $1.7 trillion in automatic sequestration cuts are allowed to go into effect on March 1, that gap could grow even wider. Dozens of education programs would face reduced funding, but three crucial programs [...]

[view whole blog postFormer British Prime Minister Tony Blair and businessman and philanthropist Howard Buffett have a column in Foreign Policy this week titled, "Stand with Rwanda." In the piece, they argue that aid cuts to Rwanda in the wake of the UN Group of Experts' revelations that Rwanda is actively supporting the human rights-abusing M23 rebel movement in the DRC should be restored. They ignore the "generally democratic governments don't like to give money to war-mongering states" aspect of this issue, instead focusing on the negative effects of the cuts for Rwanda's population and how indisputably effective aid has been in Rwanda.
Blair and Buffett also argue that the DRC's problems are more-or-less entirely rooted in the DRC's poor-to-barely-existant governance, fragile security, and weak state. They ...

Early one eastern Congolese morning six months ago, Josephine was sleeping in her hut, dreaming about selling her crops. She heard people singing victory songs, thinking it was part of her dream, but gunshots jolted her awake. She could see in the light of dawn that the next village was on fire. She saw people fleeing toward her village, some being shot as they ran.
