George Arnett gives a rundown of some of this year's top films.
[view whole blog postAs you may recall last week I posted an item reporting that Dreamworks Animation's latest animated film Rise of the Guardians, directed by Peter Ramsey, was looking like it was going to be a big loser fot the studio domestically.. The $145 million movvie has grossed so far only $62.25 million in the U.S.. That's not good to say the least. However, overseas it looks like a different story. The film has already opened in 45 foreign markets in the U.K. Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South America and all togetrher has grossed $90.5 million making its total to date $152, 755, 936 million. All this proving once again that overseas market is the most important box...
[view whole blog postLast Friday, as most attention was focused on the demonstrations in Cairo, workers in the big Egyptian textile city of al-Mahallat al-Kubra (Mahalla for short) took over the City Council offices, ousted the council, declared themselves a Revolutionary Committee, and declared that Mahalla was announcing its autonomy from the "Ikhwani (Brotherhood) State."
There were predictable jokes on Twitter about Mahalla joining the United Nations and laments that it was just one more item making Egypt look ridiculous in foreign eyes.

[view whole blog postWe continue to have our eyes on relative newcomer Daniele Watts, who we usually refer to as "The Strange Thing About the Johnsons actress Daniele Watts," given that it was via that very controversial short film that many of us were first introduced to her. Since then, over the last 12 months, she's been cast in TV and film roles, most notably Showtime's Weeds for its final season; and Quentin Tarantino's highly-anticipated and hotly-contested slave revenge narrative Django Unchained, which will be her big-screen debut - she'd done mostly TV, theater and shorts work before this, and her resume begins in 2008, so she's...

Editor's Note: "From the grassroots women leaders of Congo to the women leaders of the White House," a Change.org petition penned by activist Neema Namadamu in the eastern Congo town of Bukavu has seen a surge in support in recent days. Enough Project partner organization World Pulse, a Portland, Oregon-based women's media group, worked closely the activists in Bukavu, and the World Pulse founder Jensine Larsen wrote this post about the collective effort.
The day the rebels seized the large town of Goma, threatening to ignite more bloodshed and misery in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, I couldn't stop pacing and shaking. Although I have no relatives there, my sisters are in the path of advancing rebels.

One of several ongoing conflicts in Sudan, systematic violence in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states targets civilians and is perpetrated by rebels groups and government forces.
The Enough Project's Jonathan Hutson joined panelists Jonathan Temin of the U.S. Institute of Peace, EJ Hogendoorn of the International Crisis Group, and Lauren Ploch Blanchard of the Congressional Research Service to discuss the ongoing humanitarian crisis and how the international community can work to end the suffering and address underlying causes of violence. The panelists each offered insights into the current conflict, including historical background and recommendations for ...

[view whole blog postLast week, the electronics industry updated its list of audited conflict-free smelters to 29. This is up from 11 smelters in the Conflict-Free Smelter program, or CFS, at the start of 2012-nearly tripling the size of the program over the past year. The smelters were audited by independent auditors chosen by the Electronics Industry Citizenship Coalition-Global-eSustainability Initiative, or EICC-GeSI, Audit Review Committee, which includes HP, Motorola Solutions, a non-industry academic, and a handful of other companies.
This is a particularly important topic, because smelters are the key chokepoint in the conflict minerals supply chain, with only 151 main smelters worldwide, according to EICC-GeSI. Smelters know where their minerals come from, so having conflict-free smelters is critical ...
