When Awate.com wanted to display the martyrs' database they obtained from Eritrea on their Martyrs Album[1998-2003], they asked the help of Asmarino.com. Tes converted some excel spreadsheets provided by Awate.com into a Format that allowed the information provided to be displayed on Awate's old home page under Martyrs' Album . And that was used only for that purpose, except for one case. With Awate.com's consent the data was also used to broadcast the names of the Martyrs on Voice of Delina in 2005 during the week of June 18-30. (Awate's Saleh Gadi participated by reading some of the names himself.) Eritrean volunteers from around the world read the names. Asmarino, at great cost, bought extended air time for three days to broadcast the ...

Their scarcity has become increasingly apparent in recent years, and so worrying that the National Trust published a paper focused entirely on the issue, and was discussed in grave concern by both Sir David Attenborough and Chris Packham.

[view whole blog postSince the M23 seized Goma in November, a cascade of criticism has rained down on MONUSCO, the UN peacekeeping mission in the Congo. The opprobrium was widespread and came from Congolese civil society, foreign diplomats and media alike. Why couldn't the 19,000 blue helmets prevent the biggest trade hub in the eastern Congo from falling? Why couldn't they live up to their mandate and protect civilians in imminent danger?
I, too, have been disappointed by the UN, but not for the above reasons. In short: the UN has been stripped of what it does best, brokering a political peace process and has been reduced to what it is worst at--military protection.
[view whole blog postRather than provide a retrospective post that relates to this blog, my work or even aid in development I want to end the year with a lighthearted post. Therefore, I present my top tracks from 2012. I really dug into Frank Ocean's channel ORANGE over the past week or so and I am obsessed to put it mildly.
Grimes has to be what I find to be the most surprising artist, for myself, this year. Her sound is layered upon almost entirely unintelligible lyrics. She is almost the exact opposite of the stripped down track Laura by Bat for Lashes and everything song by The XX. For some reason the experimentation that goes only as far as a pop song can go makes for some captivating songs.
[view whole blog postYes folks. It's definitely Quentin Tarantino week here on S & A, but then again, who else has the most talked about and discusssed film at the moment? But if you think Django Unchained is controversial, then you ain't seen nothing yet. In an interview with The Root, Tarantino talks about what may possibly be his next film project, dealing with black troops in France during World War II in 1944, after the D-Day invasion. He called it Killing Crow, saying that it was to be part of a trilogy that would've included Inglorious Basterds. In the interview when questioned about the project he said: "I don't know exactly when...

[view whole blog postI missed a day, so I'm posting 2 today. But first, recapping what I said about this series a few days ago when I started it... I'll begin counting down the top 10 S&A posts of 2012, considering a number of factors, like number of comments, Facebook "likes," Facebook "shares," Twitter retweets, page views, and more. The countdowan will continue through next week Wednesday, as we enter the new year, when the top post/item will be revealed. Number 10 on the list, posted on Monday, was Cybel's A Cinematographer's Plea to the Budding Film Auteur : Move Your Camera. If you missed it, click HERE to read (or re-read);...

[view whole blog postNo, K'Naan's "God, Country or the Girl" did not make my list of best albums of 2012. And his post-facto denouncement of its contents in an op-ed in The New York Times (!) has nothing to do with it. With the exception of a cut with Nas ("Nothing to Lose"), K'Naan's album is an objective lesson [...]
[view whole blog postThis list of 10 albums by African artists probably says more about my own musical preferences than it does about all those other "Best Albums of 2012″ year-end lists floating around on the web which didn't include them (looking at you, Pitchfork, Stereogum, The FADER and SPIN). Not unlike last year, I'm surprised these albums [...]
