Courtney most excellently wrote about Michel Ocelot's heralded new animation feature, Tales of the Night. when the film played for a week in New York, back in September (HERE). And now the latest film by the director of the Kirikou animated series, will be playing in Chicago for a week's engagement, at the end of this month, at the Gene Siskel Film Center in downtown Chicago (the same place where John Amokfrah's The Nine Muses will be playing next week on Thursday Nov. 15 with Akomfrah in person). Tales of the Night will screen Nov. 23-29, twice a day (four times on Sat. the 24th) in both an English dubbed, and subtitled versions, and you can find out...

So the story goes like this...Two weeks ago I wrote a piece on Peter Ramsey, the first African-American animation director to direct a major big budget studio animated film, Dreamwork Animation's The Rise of the Guardians coming out this month (HERE) I made it clear that, of course, there are many people of color who are working in animation though we don't know who most of them are. But that wasn't good enough for one commentor who said: "You pass over them because many have assumedly Euro-sounding names. This has been the case in the present and the past. So unless you see a picture, it's like they don't exist. They do though." Of course...

From Welcome to Asmarino Independent. Fri Nov 9 2012, 21:18:40

The lopsided defeat of the Republican Party has also inflicted some ego bruising to the Eritrean government, its minuscule members of PFDJ in North America and the sorry excuse for an embassy in Washington DC. A semi -unofficial campaign was being orchestrated to vote against president Obama after he went public with his sanction against the Eritrean regime for "human trafficking".  As usual the followers of Isaias are full of themselves. They overestimate their significance and more sadly their imaginary leverage against the American government. What will be their excuse and agenda moving forward? More lecture about America's jealousy over the extraordinary economic development in Eritrea? Recommend to President Obama how to learn from the exemplary water and energy ...

From ...My heart's in Accra Fri Nov 9 2012, 19:54:49

Shortly after I posted a review of Mads Brügger's "The Ambassador", a film that raised some interesting questions about what constitutes ethical and responsible journalism about Africa, I got a reminder about just how low alleged journalists can go in reporting about places they don't know. I got a PR pitch from the folks at [...]

From FP Passport Fri Nov 9 2012, 19:43:54

Unless you've been living in a cave for the past five hours, you've probably heard by now that David Petraeus -- perhaps the most universally admired person in American public life -- suddenly resigned as director of the CIA for, as he told agency staffers in a message Friday, "engaging in an extramarital affair."

Slate's Fred Kaplan reports that his paramour was none other than Paula Broadwell, the co-author of a highly flattering biography of the former general, All In: The Education of David Petraeus. (FP tried to contact Broadwell via several channels Friday, but she did not respond.)

Before I sign off for the day... I almost forgot! Skyfall opens in USA theaters today, and I'm betting it's #1 on your to-see list. The critics LOVE it, scoring a 93% rating with over 200 reviews in this far, and I'm sure it'll sweep the competition at the box office this weekend. Excited talk of a future black James Bond, with Idris Elba potentially being the chosen one, have been all over the web recently - including right here on S&A. Some of you may remember that another Brit actor, Colin Salmon, was also once rumored to be considered for the role, although that obviously never happend; he did appear in at least 3 James Bond movies (not playing...
